  和田英松は1912年の「吾妻鏡古写本考」において、『吾妻鏡』編纂の意図について触れ、「此書の編纂は、幕府の記録を統一して、先例調査の機関に備えんが為にして、且つは開幕以来、久しく年序を経たるを以て、歴代将軍の実記編纂の必要を生じたるが故にて」と推定した。
  『吾妻鏡』より後の時代の宗尊親王の子の7代将軍惟康親王の帰京は『とはずがたり』に描かれており、その前の三代と同様に一旦佐助ヶ谷に行きそこから京へ出発するが、将軍を御所から出すときに「先例だから」と逆輿（さかさごし）にして将軍を乗せたとあり、益田は逆輿だけでなく将軍を廃するときの一定の慣行が既に確立していたのではないかとする。
